My cousin has a picture of (I think?) her GG Gramps. He is wearing the "Black hat" of the Iron Brigade from Wisconsin. Would love to know more and couldn't find muster rolls and don't know what Regiment. Any help GREATLY appreciated! Thanks

I now have his pic downloaded but don't know how to get it here??

The only Orville Wheelock from Wisconsin I can find is this guy, with 1st WI heavy artillery; the black hat (Hardee Hat) was standard issue in the early part of the war, not exclusive to the Iron Brigade regiments. The only other Orville Wheelock was from Michigan, but not the 24th MI.

That was my first thought. I don't think the Iron Brigade wore any unique badge or any identifying feature, such as turned up brim. So a photo of a hat would not be sufficient proof it was worn by one of those regiments.

Definitely an artilleryman.

When the photographer said "Smile", he didn't even hear him and kept looking away.
