Onion Rings

If you want something different than the traditional onion ring - and do I ever love them! - you might try bacon wrapped onion rings. You put brown sugar with cayenne pepper in it in a baggie and coat the onion ring with it. Wrap the bacon around the ring and bake in the oven until crispy and well candied! It's some work, but it's very good! Use the large rings or double them so it will stand up to the bacon. Turn them once. Sriracha mayonnaise is a good dipping sauce!
I'm having a hard time visualizing how to wrap bacon around the ring, unless the ring is first collapsed like a rubber band. Is that what you do? It's worth clarifying, as I happen to believe that bacon is one of the best flavor enhancers known to mankind.

Well, good ol' Buzzfeed happens to have a how-to video! Their recipe is different from mine, but it shows the wrapping technique:

I myself would rather have onion rings then french fries, but what I can not understand why there is such a big difference in the price places charge for them.I have seen them range from $1.99 to $7.99 which makes no sense since in most cases you are not even getting half of an onion.

There are two types that are common around here. In burger joints they do be in a chicken fried type coating and in a Fish & Chip takeaway (called a chipper locally or chippy in the United Kingdom). In the Fish & Chip takeaway they are in a crispy batter and fried in beef dripping. I like both types as they have their merits. If I was forced to choose I would go for the beef dripping version , it's not for everyday eating but a nice treat now & again. I'll always regret not trying the onion rings in a place called the Beacon in Spartanburg, SC. It was a local icon and they had sacks upon sacks of fresh onions in the middle of the restaurant. Their onion rings were one of their specialty items , live & learn.

I love onion rings but I'm a bit picky. Lot of places don't make them right and they're a disappointment; I hate food disappointments. But a real onion ring is the best.

But I can get real eclairs ! We've got a very good little bakery close by that makes everything the old fashioned way and without fake additives. I often stop there and get dessert for the evening.

Fun fact: onion rings are one of the major staples of takeaway food here in New Zealand alongside the more well-known dish, fish and chips. It has been a while since I have had onion rings, but they do pair really well with sweet and sour or tartar sauce 😋

I do love an onion ring. The onions in the usa are good and mainly in crispy crust of flour. I'm fond of the ones in our fish and chip shops the odd time. The Italian Irish chip shops cook them in a batter similar to fish batter and cook them in beef dripping , indulgent but very good on occasion.
