in 1859, the day of John Brown's execution, he said "I, John Brown, am now quite certain that the crimes of this guilty land will never be purged away but with blood. I had, as I now think, vainly flattered myself that without very much bloodshed it might be done."

Love him or hate him, it was prophetic.
 
Bruce Catton, I believe, noted that Slavery had the maddening (to the south) property of enobling its enemies, no matter how reprehensible their other qualities may have been.
