The Miami was a side-wheel steamer, double-ender gunboat launched at the Philadelphia Navy Yard on November 16, 1861. She saw service on the Mississippi and James rivers and in the North Carolina sounds. On April 19th and May 5th, 1864 Miami participated in attacks on the CSS Albemarle which would be sunk in October by Lieutenant William B. Cushing.
The double-ender decommissioned at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on May 22, 1865, and was sold at auction on August 10, 1865. Miami continued to serve as a commercial vessel until 1869.
The USS Miami had a complement of 134 officers and men. Her speed was 8 knots. She was armed with 1 × 100-pounder Parrott rifle, 1 × 9 in (230 mm) smoothbore Dahlgren gun and 4 × 24-pounder guns.
