Old Glory was also used as a central marker in the disposition of Union lines.

When a Federal infantry regiment was deployed in full battle line formation, its silken colors (both the national and regimental flags) were positioned to indicate the center of the line. (Company guidons and regimental flank markers were aligned to these centrally placed colors).
