Since Christmas only 5 days away, thought post a few old cookie recipes.

Date Skillet Cookies were enjoyed at Christmas time in the 1800s. My Aunt always made them.

8 oz. dates, chopped
1 cup brown sugar
2 cups pecans
2 tablespoons white Karo syrup
1/2 stick butter

Mix together and cook 8 minutes, stirring. Add 2 cups rice crispies. Let cool. Shape into rolls and cut and roll in cocoanut or powdered sugar.

This is recipe my Aunt used.

Another favorite cookie at Christmas is Macaroons. Here is an Oatmeal Macaroons recipe.

1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
1 egg
2 1/2 cup water
1/2 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup raisins
1/2 cup coconut
1 1/4 cup Quick Quaker Oats
1 cup nuts

Cream shortening and sugar. Add beaten egg. Sift flour, baking powder, salt and soda, add to creamed mixture. Then add water. Last add raisins, cocanut, nuts and oats. Drop onto greased pan with teaspoon. Bake at 350 degrees. Makes about 3 1/2 dozen.

These cookies are so yummy. Merry Christmas.

Ginger Crips

Cream one half cup of butter with one half cup of sugar, add one cup molasses, one teaspoon each of cinnamon and nutmeg, one teaspoon of salt, two teaspoons baking powder, and flour to make stiffish dough. Roll them, cut out with cutter and bake in quick oven.

You can use Christmas cutters, like stars, bells and reindeer ones. They are so festive and a treat for all.
