Charles Lovett was born 1803 in New Jersey. Moved to southern Greene County, Tennessee around 1835. He was a brickmaker/mason.
He enlisted at Chimney Top Mt. in Greene County on Nov. 15, 1861, with many others by Captain David Fry, 2nd Tennessee Infantry Regiment, Union. Sworn in by Fry as a Recruit and on his way to Kentucky with others to join their Company were fired upon by the Rebels from below while climbing a mountain. The Rebels made a charge, killing, wounding and capturing a number.
Charles Lovett was shot through the body, with a small rifle ball above the hip joint near the spinal column. The rifle ball passed upward through the diaphragm and imbedded in the right lobe of his lung, where it remained.
The men captured were eventually released and sent back to Greene County, Tennessee.
He joined the 1st Tennessee Cavalry Regiment, Union (Originally organized as the 4th Tennessee Infantry at Camp Garber, near Flat lick, Kentucky in Nov. 1861).
The 1st Tennessee Cavalry on January 28, 1863, was transferred to Nashville, Tennessee and immediately had numerous skirmishes with the Confederate Cavalry forces around Franklin and Triune, Tennessee.
Charles Lovett of Company I of the 1st Tennessee Cavalry Regiment, Union, commanded by Colonel Robert Johnson (son of Andrew Johnson) was honorable discharged April 10, 1863, by reason of physical disability from gunshot wound and old age.
Charles Lovett returned to Greene County, Tennessee and died June 3, 1872.
