Welcome. I like the Cornell site recommended by @Andersonh1 . I'm not aware of a tutorial on how to use the records. If you are following a reference in a publication, it will probably tell you what volume and page number to go to. Sometimes, though, I'm looking for records for a certain geographical area and time period, in which case I will have to pay close attention to the description on the Cornell listing.

I have compiled a list of the Google Books downloaded version of every OR volume, Series 1-4, for both Army and Navy.

Here is my document.

I'm still working on the descriptions, as well as linking Series 2-4, and the Navy one.

Every volume is searchable.

Great resource, thanks for sharing that. I like the scans at your links much better. The search function works better and the files are smaller than the Hathi Trust versions, but still very readable.

I don't see a good match. I think I would put it in Researching Civil War Records and Ancestry. And I would not be hesitant to post reminders, when appropriate, in any other forum's thread.

I had not used the Cornell site in a long time. Then someone explained how to use button menu to make a word search in the PDF format and that makes it much easier to search and to copy. I was doing it the hard way of capturing a screen image but the window only allowed a snapshot of 1/2 or less of the page.

Currently working on categorizing the Supplement reports in Volumes 51-53. As of now, Volume 51 includes twenty-eight additional reports for Antietam, as well as almost every single report for the Pennsylvania Reserves that year.

Takeaways from categorizing Volumes 51-53:
Volume 51 notable contents:
- All of the Pennsylvania Reserves' reports for the Peninsula, 2nd Bull Run, and Antietam
- All of the Washington Artillery's reports for Chancellorsville and Bermuda Hundred
- Confederate artillery reports for Williamsburg
- Reports for Toombs' entire brigade at Antietam
- Early's, Anderson's, Stuart's, and Fitz Lee's reports for the Overland Campaign
- Most of the Union reports of Crawford's (5th Corps) and Barlow's (2nd Corps) Divisions at Hatcher's Run (February)
- QM reports for the entire war in the Eastern Theater
Volume 52 notable contents:
- US and CS army organizations at Shiloh
- Capt. Montgomery (CS fleet commander)'s report for Battle of Memphis
- All reports for Slocomb's company, Washington Artillery for Perryville, Jackson, Chattanooga, and Atlanta
- Union cavalry reports for Atlanta
Volume 53 notable contents:
- Union regimental reports for the Assault on Fort Wagner

I prefer having all books on my thumb drive for immediate access. I bought the entire OR off of eBay which were on DVDs. Saved me time.
