I'm in the wrong state--I was told so.
While scrolling down Pinterest, looking at wash-dresses actually, I spotted this picture and the first thing I noticed (other than the big knife) was the tab-additions to his jacket. Reckon he grew...or was that someone else's jacket to begin with?

Also...what kind of revolver is that ?

Apparently, he was Private James House, Sixteenth Georgia Cavalry Battalion. (That's what the Pinterest link said--not that I trust them implicitly.)

I think it was a jacket made for a skinnier man, then issued to this guy. Note that the arm length looks fine. The tabs appear to be professionally made and they have stitched button holes. It's really a mystery to me. I can't comment on the revolver, either. I'm not sure I've ever seen one like it. I will be interested in learning about it, too.

Looks to be either a Bacon or Manhattan revolver

Ease tabs such as those aren't uncommon on tailored civilian clothing of the 1840s to early 1860s. If his coat was cut very form fitting in the manner of late 1840s military clothing, say the M1847 fatigue blouse, then the tabs may be needed to the coat to fit comfortably when seated.
The tabs match the body of the jacket, and are obviously sewn to the inside edge of the jacket's lapel, so that are there by design and not an addition that this soldier made after picking up the jacket somewhere else.

I think the revolver is a Bacon. The grip has what looks to me to be a washer visible on the grip.

Cheers,
Garrett

I could be wrong, but the jacket looks made that way. The buttons are too close to edge and creates that gap.

It's odd looking.

Interesting find and thanks for posting.

I am friends with the owner of the original image. The Pinterest ID is correct. (For a change :-) )

This is odd. I was wondering about if the tabs were intended to allow a vest to be worn under the jacket for warmth, but this should not be needed for jacket over a vest.

Actually I was wrong. There's a James House in the 13th Georgia Cavalry which was formed by a merger which included the 16th.
Very cool.

I had 6 family members, including a grandfather that was in that unit. 2 of the 6 were in his Co. E so no doubt they knew him. Awesome!
