Had the Southern States left peacefully it would not have relieved all the tensions between the North and South. Would the separation have ended up locked in consent struggle between to two areas or peaceful coexistence? To investigate this I will start with the first issue, slavery.
With their own nation the South would no longer have to worry about the North ending slavery. But this is only the skin of the slavery issue. Depending on which states joined the Confederacy, would have impacted the continuation of slavery. Over time some of the Confederate states would have threatened the continued existence of slavery as slavery grew less important in that state. It may have taken 30 or 40 years, but the slave issue probably would have became an issue between the states of the Confederacy. So forming their own nation would have slowed the threat to ending slavery, but not salved the problem.
Having their own nation would not have completely stopped slaves from running away. In fact it would have became harder to get the Northern states to return runaway slaves. This reluctance of Northern States to return or pay for the runaway slaves would have certainly led to struggles between the Union and the Confederacy. The South would have limited options to force the Northern States to return runaway slaves. I have difficulty thinking up a solution that both side could have found acceptable and can not see a way to avoid conflict between the two nations over this.
If someone wants to tag in on the issue of tariffs they are welcome to post. I will have to give a bit more thought to see if how the tariffs issue would have been impacted.
