The story of North Carolina supplying uniforms to he troops is an interesting story, but what references can I use to understand what these North Carolina uniforms? Well this book is not a bad start,\.

But what other references are available? Well one should start with Frederic Todd.

But what are other sources?

This journal has a really nice article about North Carolina uniforms with 5 nice black and white North Carolina uniform studies.

Sadly this journal is on the rare side. What are some of the other good resources for North Carolina issued uniforms?

I probably have 20 books that show a single uniform from North Carolina, but the coverage is hit and miss.

Unfortunately, no one has ever published anything with intensive research on nc uniforms. There are a few articles you can find online that people have done in the past, but the majority of them are either outdated, brief descriptions, or just inaccurate. I've personally have done my own intensive research on them by pulling the original documents at the archives, examining multiple original garments and studying photographs.

I rely on "State Troops and Volunteers: A Photographic Record of North Carolina's Civil War Soldiers: Volume 1", by Greg Mast. It came out in 1995, and was to be followed by another volume, which never came to light. Abebooks.com has several listed. Hopefully, after COVID, interlibrary loans will resume.

Mast's book is by far the most detailed out there, only issue I have with it is I believe some of the photographs have been misidentified as nc soldiers. There are a few in it that are wearing jackets that have more characteristics of say the dept of Alabama jackets or other deep south depots. Be hard to say for fact that they are, but it's definitely something to dig further into
