Looking closely at the first picture, you will see an officer sitting on a stump in the background. His leggings caught my attention. And judging from the second picture, it appears it is the officer standing on the extreme right with a notepad in his left breast pocket. Am I wrong or right? He no longer has a hat up front, and in the background, what is he doing?
Lubliner.

The officer you're referring to is Capt. Christian Rath. He was in charge of the hanging of the Lincoln conspirators.
