Nice Find Today...

I have to admit….this is the first one I will hand my child when, or, if they develop a curiosity / interest in the ACW….

Wonderful text, beautiful, period illustrations, from period artists… and lots of pictures to keep the young ones engaged….THAT is why I would choose this one…

I stopped at the thrift store on the way home from work in search of another item. I was in a hurry but decided to check the books before I left. I found this rare boxed set of the American Heritage Picture History of the Civil War. I actually already had a one-volume copy of the book but I couldn't pass this up. It's in excellent condition and includes the chronology book...

Nice find, Bryan! I would've passed however, since the set like yours was my Christmas gift from my father in 1960, the year it was published. The case is now worn and slightly split and the books themselves show wear - not bad though, because the red buckram binding has held up really well. I've treasured it ever since, so it's understandable if it shows its age - just like its owner!

...but still 'American Heritage, Picture History of….'

(It was a no brainer for me when I came across mine as well…Catton, Homer Winslow, Waud….)

If you don't have or are unaware of it, American Heritage also published an even larger book on Civil War Art with outstanding reproductions of many original works.

I smiled when I read the OP. This is a book from my childhood.
Like James N, my parents purchased it when it came out. Spent many childhood hours pouring over the maps and illustrations. Although now aged, it is still intact. Shows signs of use and love.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
George

I'm not sure why I have passed up those other editions, my one-volume is literally falling apart; binding is broke. Suppose it's because it was one of my first books on the Civil War and has great colored maps.

It is surprisingly inexpensive to have old books rebound! I never knew this, but it costs only about 15 Euros, that will be under 20 Dollars. Not too much if it is a book you love and don't dare to browse anymore for fear of further damage. If you can't find a bookbinder, ask you local library if they could give you notice when they send their damaged volumes to the bookbinder, and if they would send your's too, then. We do that also for our readers, no extra cost for postage, a separate invoice, no problem. And these freshly bound volumes just look so great!

LOL, we (I) have a bookshelf problem, too! I keep adding more and am starting to fun out of room...MrsMRB sez "Buy what you want" and on the other hand will sometimes remark "Don't you have a few like that already?" But, if it is something I really want, she quickly adds, "If you want it, get it!"

Oh my, you are so lucky!!! My other half also says "If you want it, buy it", but the way he says it, it rather sounds like "You must be completely crazy! Meters and meters of unread books, no room on any shelf, puddles of books on the floor, but now you tell me you must have this one too?? You must be kidding!!" I will get him aquainted with your charming wife in September, then he may learn from her how to behave towards a substantial need! :D

This boxed said you @Bryan_C showed us is wonderful!! I would have bought it instantly, too!! When I was in Oregon in 2014 I was lucky to find this one in a Book Warehouse for just $7.99. I use it quite often for Trivia!

Thanks for the tip. I live in a town of only 300 so we don't have much of a local library. I think the nearest book binder is in Lincoln or Omaha so a ways away.

Great find !
I've been lucky at remote "trash & treasure" type stores as well.

Back in the 90's I hit the jackpot at one such store. I was able to purchase the vintage Time-Life Seafarers Series at $1.50 per the issue of my choice.

Ah! I'm jealous!

I've been wanting to add 'Seafarers' to my Time Life series collection for a while!

I got both my complete (with index volumes!) sets of the 'Old West' and 'Civil War' series for $40 out the door.

That was my 'deal of the year' for 2013!

(Here they are conveniently packed in a box - the misses and i are in the middle of a move.)

Thats a great deal !
I've always wanted the 'Old West' series.

In my case, the guy that owned this thrift shop didn't really have an interest in books or military items.
However, he was an expert in old bottles, jugs and rusty antique farm implements.

A few years latter, I was able to buy a World War One German helmet shell (m1917 Stahlhelm) from him for about $80.00.

Even back then, that model helmet shell in (good to average condition) was selling for about $145- $220 on legit militaria sites.

It's almost doubled in price now, no doubt due the Great War centennial.

I can honestly say I've not heard about this set. I have some of the Old West. I have two more to get to complete my Civil War set.

Great info!

Several years ago i took my copy of 'Lee's Grenadier Guard' to the UTSA Special Collections facility and a very nice lady helped me rebind the nearly-seperated cover to the page packets, followed by a lesson on how to properly mylar wrap books.

That's when i learned what a 'bone folder' was and how to use one.
