I recently completed my confederate impression, and it's good for late war. I've been looking into what I should get next, and I'm considering getting a new jacket for early-mid war. I am in the 6th NC, but we typically fall in with the 26th NC. The 26th's required jacket is a Richmond dept type II, and only bought from Ben Tart. I could actually try and work on my federal impression.... But I am currently considering either the NC Sack coat, or the Richmond type II. Any advice is appreciated.

In my opinion I would recommend going with the RD-II jacket... it would cover a pretty good time range of use... from Spring of 1862 to mid-late 1864.. and beyond.... the transition from one style of RD jacket to the next had a known overlap period.... so can also be found in photo evidence even later... This would also further enable you to be more flexible and generic ANV in ones portrayal ability.... Hence can easily portray just about any such ANV troops in the field as may be needed without adjustment...

Where would you suggest getting one, Bent tart is highly recommended in my unit, and required in the 26th, but takes around 6 months. Blockade runner is most likely lower quality. The regimental Quartermaster has them to order, but I don't know if they make them themselves, or send the order to someone else.

Quality takes time and is worth waiting for.

Ben Tart makes excellent quality goods. As mentioned quality many times takes time to produce. If you have any period sewing knowledge, Ben also offers Kits and Blanks that you could assemble or finish on your own at a less cost than the finished product. If you desire to match up closely with what the 26th NC is using I would inquire as to which fabric they are using, to see what can be found closest to that.

There are other folks out there that also produce a high quality product also as mentioned Charlie Childs, Wambaugh & White, and Dick Watters, just to name a few off hand..

Blockade Runner has shown a great improvement in their goods over the years. However they like Regt QM typically market the less expensive average quality goods that are favored by much of the mainstream community since its commonly less expensive, and quick off the rack. If you need something quick, this may be an option... if willing and able to wait and want a higher quality product.. I would first consider one of the others..

How good is your Union impression and your late war Confederate impression? Depending on what level of authenticity you are trying to achieve; perhaps both might need more work.

Could you please post photographs of your impressions?

Joe Blunt also makes a quality product.

I only have a kepi and belt buckle for Union, but some of my stuff carries over. For union I need a jacket, and pants. My confederate impression is here. (I'm replacing the bayonet and scabbard)
