Newest Acquisition

This just arrived today from my good friend Larry Hicklen at Yesteryear Relics in Murfreesboro. 1863 American Bible Society Bible with inscription on inside cover stating it came off the U.S.S. Kearsarge. No provenance to prove it, but the Bible came from Boston, which is where the Kearsarge returned to after the engagement with the Alabama, arriving at the Navy Yard in November, 1864. Nice conversation piece.

Cant find a Luther Burke in the Naval records what the name on the opposite page?

It is Luther Bucker or Buckes, I can't make out the last letter as an "r" or a "s". Most likely Bucker.

The name "Winslow" is written on the opposite page. I can't believe that it would be Capt. Winslow himself, that would be wishful thinking, especially since it was a presentation Bible to someone else.

If I thought for one minute this Bible actually belonged to John A. Winslow himself, I would do my happy dance...
