I'm a long time civil war buff, did reenacting in high school, got countless books on the war and read profusely about it. My history teacher in high school actually got me to teach that section because I raised my hand and corrected him so much. As a new guy I might ruffle feathers, but in my lurking tonight I noticed lots of complaints about G&G being too much about Stonewall and saw people say they didn't like Stonewall? I'm curious as to why (I can see not liking G&G, it is long with way too much backstory and not enough tactics for my taste) but not liking Stonewall? I'd like to hear more.
Also in my lurking I saw the thread about how slavery absolutely started the war. That is false. Winners write history books. Almost every other nation on Earth ended slavery without firing a shot. All Lincoln had to do was get congress to stop paying people to catch slaves. If you do research you'll also find that the south was phasing out slavery even before the war but the rich 1% had laws made banning releasing your slaves, because it made it too difficult to tell who was a runaway and who was freed.
The north had slaves, not to the extent of the south, but they had them, and the emancipation proclamation didn't free a single slave in territories Lincoln had control over. If you want to talk about slavery, how about the fact that old honest Abe started the draft and forced hundreds of thousands of Americans to go die in war, or else be shot for draft dodging. Also, Abe suspended habeus corpus and imprisoned 30,000 war protestors, and started a war without congressional approval.
The civil war was about an oppressive central government, the same reason the founding fathers fought Britain.
Hope I didn't ruffle too many feathers on my first post. Thanks

Well.....welcome. As my first statement, I will add "Duck! Incoming!"

Where are you from, wrangler94? I'm not sure you would have survived my history class. But welcome anyway. If you stick around, I think you'll learn a lot.

Welcome wrangler. No worries about our feathers, lets just see if you can back up your statements with some evidence. I think you will find that Lincoln did want to find ways to slowly phase out slavery, problem was the South didn't give him a chance, they kinda seceded.

"Winners write history books" I'll assume you mean these kind of winners. Cause you probably need adonis dna to have come up with the the lost cause myth.

Welcome Newb. From Michigan and learn a lesson from those of us from the Cold War Era- learn to duck and cover.

Welcome from east Tennessee ! You're absolutely correct, the winners of wars write their history, and that history is usually written in stone, regardless ! I assure you those of " a different persuasion " than yours will be around shortly to point out to you, in their usual elitist and arrogant way the "errors of your way," So dig your trench deep and keep your powder dry ! Seriously, the vast majority of folks here are fine people who share your love of Civil War history. They greatly outnumber the few "jerks" you'll encounter.

Hi, Wrangler, and welcome from Missouri. I think your interest in the war and your willingness to state your views so openly will lead to many lively discussions here.

Greetings and welcome from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. With your first statement, someone should warn you about poking a hornet's nest with a stick. Hope you enjoy your visits and keep an open mind, as there are many educated people here with a differing viewpoint.
