Hello all!

I'm a long time model railroad enthusiast so am not new to modeling in general but I would like to begin modeling Civil War Miniatures for my new office. I figured I'd start with just the figures themselves, paint them and stage them for display and then move on to dioramas. Do you all have any suggestions as to good starter sets for a beginner?

Thanks in advance!

To start out I would get some Master Box figures . These are 1/35 scale so a bit smaller than the standard 1/32 but they are inexpensive and fairly well done . They are plastic and need assembly . ScaleHobbyist has them online . You can get a set of 3 Union cavalry for 18.99 or 4 Confederate infantry for 13.79 . There are others in the series as well . They would be good for beginners .

As far as smaller figures as a starter, check out Perry Brother's. Sometimes in the smaller scale, it's difficult to get everything in scale. If you're painting the figures for gaming purposes, that's not a big deal. But if your painting for a diorama, or a static, stand alone figure and a bit anal about proper scale (like me), the Perry line is pretty good, and have pretty good detail. I prefer larger scale figures (90mm or thereabout), for the greater detail, but even on something of that size, if something is out of scale, like a head or hands, it's distracting, and no amount of great painting will help.

A U.S.-based website for Perry-->https://www.thewarstore.com/perry-brothers-miniatures.html

I think they are 28mm, which is a nice size to get started on, and are rather inexpensive for multiple figures, and once you develop the finer aspects of painting, you can go to the larger size. With you're model RR background, you shouldn't have any problem with displaying them. An artillery crew in action is always appropriate for any display, for example.

And you're welcomed in advance!

The warstore has gone out of business or is on the ragged edge of doing so. I agree with Booner that the Perry brothers do some of the nicest figures in 28mm and with a wide variety of poses. For painting tips you can go to the Miniatures page, which covers wargaming, figures, uniform info and painting tips. Some of those guys are REALLY good painters. Good luck H
