Have an opportunity to buy 1864 springfield conversion. Would like to know your general opinion. I have not seen this type of conversion before. Im new to the forum so bear with me on the pics.....

I am within 60 miles of the Springfield Armory Museum. I plan on going there within the next week or so. When I do, hopefully, I will be wiser when I depart...........

According to Flayderman's guide only 3007 of them made, all in 1865. Values listed from $900 in good condition to $2000 in fine condition. Interesting gun.

The conversion piece has the inscription " B.F. JOSLYN'S PATENT/OCT. 8 1861 JUNE 24 1862" but JohanSteele had already figured that out.....

So are you guys saying that this is not a springfield but a Joslyn? I thought Joslyn was one conversion part and the remaining rifle was a springfield?

I think what is being said that it is a Springfield but it has Joslyn's patented conversion to a breech loader.

It appears to me that the conversion required the production of a new stock for the rifle. I am guessing that this played at least a part in why it wasn't produced in greater numbers although I am sure there were other factors too.

I have seen genuine Springfields but I am not that familiar with them. Do you think this is a Springfield 1864 stock or has it been altered? Also, in the 1st photo, what is that metal part that looks like a "J" that is only on some Springfields???
