New here/looking for info

Thank you fairfield. A lot of acronyms though. Would you mind clarifying:
GAR, SUV, HDS
Thx so much
GAR stands for Grand Army of the Republic. It was a national veterans' group of Civil War vets; there were individual chapters in most towns.

SUV stands for Sons of Union Veterans. As the actual veterans died off, their sons & descendants formed their own organization to carry on. SUV is heir to many GAR records. Its website is worth scouring (https://suvcw.org/)

HDS stands for Historic Data Systems. It puts out a subscription data base (American Civil War Research Database) containing records of soldiers (and photographs if possible), units & rosters, chronicles and battle synopses. There is a subscription fee but it's pretty minimal.

Yes, I have emailed to try to get access to the muster rolls that do exist in a new jersey library but have not heard back yet.

I do feel, due to the information you all have given me already, that I am 99% sure my relative was Captain George W. Hummel on the list provided by Redrover. He would be twice great grandfather on my father's mother's side.
Connecting him to the imprisonment is the last piece I need to track down, to make sure this was his diary.
New Jersey can be a bear to search. Using the Wiki at FamilySearch, I worked my way from "New Jersey Military Records" to https://www.familysearch.org/en/wiki/10th_Regiment,_New_Jersey_Infantry which is specifically on the 10th. If it has nothing itself, note the references that have been used.

Another place you might try contacting is Reclaim the Records (https://www.reclaimtherecords.org/)--but be wary because they fundraise with vigor. I believe that the organization started with the problems of NJ being tight with records. The Maine State Archives makes available many enlistment records and most service records; these give place of birth and other such information. NJ may be sitting on this kind of information as well.
