New Eras

Recently, someone (Mark?) mentioned that there seemed to be several Eras. I just ran across an early 1861 advertisement for the Red River Packet Co. that listed their vessels as: Grand Era and Era 4, 5, 6 and 7.

Grand Era ran from Shreveport to New Orleans and was listed as a "Lightening Express Packet." The other boats connected with Grand Era at Shreveport and then went up the shallower rivers -- Era 4 and 7 up the Red River, Era 5 to points above the raft as far as Fulton, and Era 6 to Jefferson and the lakes.

NEW Era is not mentioned, but there seem to be Eras around every bend.

Just be thankful the scope of CWT generally excludes discussions of the eleventy-four different steamboats Natchez, all owned by Tom Leathers and his family. Those disputes usually end in fisticuffs.
