New acquisition, M1855

Here are some pictures of a M1855 rifled musket type 2. It came from a old timers collection that was being sold off. Before buying it, I dis-assembled it to be sure of its soundness and quality. It will still shoot! I'm taking it out to the range tomorrow for a live fire shake down.

Very nice piece. Let us know how the "Live Fire" goes.

The M1855 functioned perfectly, but the accuracy was not what I hoped for at 100 yards. At 100 yards it would be acceptable deadly fire on mass infantry, but not for our modern view of a tight group. I did recover several of the ash can type minies I was testing with, and found they weren't expanding enough to fully engage the rifling. The ash/trash cans I'm using are 574s with 45 grains of 2f. This is the same round and load I'm using in my Lorenz, which shoots a much tighter group. So next, I'll try a tradition 575 mini, same powder charge and see if I get better accuracy. I must also consider this is the first time I've fired this, and as in many other old originals that I use, sometimes they need to be fired to re-train them as to their purpose.

Try a standard .580 minie ball with 45 gr. of fff. That's what i prefer for N-SSA competition. Triple F powder gives more consistency. Double F is good for reenacting or hunting ( more knockdown power ).

I used to shoot the same mini as your ash can but I think we called them a "coke can" ( this was in the 80's), and they weighed somewhere around 450 grs. 52 hrs of 2 f was my most accurate load out of a euroarms 3 hand Enfield.

Nice looking musket-i'll trade you!
