I am sure there have been a lot of posts about this kind of thing on here but I have recently found out from my grandfather that his older brother made a family tree back to the 1740's as such I have one relative in the rev war and at least one in the CW. looking online I am not sure which sites are the most effective. I have a name and place of birth but no regiment. didn't want to start blindly signing up for research sites if there happens to be one more worth while. thanks.
ps if it helps the person is from Blair country pa

I think right here the best place to start.

Give us the name, place of birth , date of birth, and any other information (even if you think it's insignificant), and I think you'll get a allot of direction on where to proceed.
ok sweet...the name of the vet I know for sure (at least according to the tree) is Alexander Tickerhoof born around 1822-25 blair county pa which is near Johnstown regiment searches seem to be fairly available but no clue where to start

OK, thanks.

I did a couple of very quick searches on fold3, (a subscription site) and the free site by the National Park Service, The soldier/sailors database.

I did not find that name.

However I did find what may be your guy at:
http://www.mytrees.com/newanc/Penns...mily/Alexander-Tickerhoof-wi003581-16556.html

There are many more members other than myself that should be able to help you.

Until then, I'll keep looking.

Do you know if that last name was spelled or misspelled on any period documents ?

No Tickerhoof, Tickerhof, Tickerhorf, etc. found via Fold3 search. Also tried Tickroot, Tackahoof, Tuckahoof, Tuckahoft, etc. and no luck.

Did locate a few with the misspelled variation Dickerhoof and Dickerhoff, one of which is listed both ways.

Dickerhoof, Isaac (41) Co B 3rd Maryland Infantry

Dickerhoof, Joseph L (29) Co C 2nd WV Veteran Infantry

Dickerhoff, Louis, Missouri Home Guard
Dickerhoff, Peter, Co E US Ohio Infantry (Index card only)
Dickerhoff, Daniel, Co F 111 Ohio Infantry
Dickerhoff, John Co A 2nd Ohio Cavalry

This is a portion of one of the many Tickerhoof families in Pennsylvania in the Ancestry Archive™.

There over 100 Tickerhoofs and over 800 Dickerhoofs on fold3. None of them seem to be your Alexander. However there is an Alexander from Pennsylvania born 1885 who seems to have been a ww1 vet, if he's any relation to you.

As the archivists are fond of saying, the lack of a record does not mean he did not serve, but I'm not seeing a record.

Both fold3 and ancestry have free trial periods. The one on ancestry is 30 days, the one on fold3 only 14, so if you want to get as much info as possible without paying, I recommend getting ancestry first so you know what to look for, then adding fold3, downloading all the records you need as files, and then canceling. Or keep your account if it seems like something you'd like as a lasting hobby.

thanks for all the help I am feeling like whoever researched the tree made a mistake his name doesn't come up in anything and 7th Miss. your correct I noticed the birthdates as well. there are a few other names on the tree I can research but I think this one was just mislabeled.
If I were you, I would try to verify the information on the tree that you are working off of. If you are going to start doing genealogical research, the best site is ancestry. They have bought up nearly every other major genealogical research repository. You can get a 2 week free trial and cancel if you don't think it will be worth the subscription fee.

How did you find/create this list?? I don't suppose you used the NPS Soliders and Sailors database?

The NPS Soliders and Sailors database was upgraded and for a time you could get a list of hits from a search. I can't do that anymore. I can hardly find anything on NPS site now. I must be doing something wrong.

I transcribed the names and info from carded records on Fold3.com and typed up a list for you of what I was able to find. Expired Image Removed
