An old friend ask me if I could help here with her GGG Grandfathers CW info and all you can give me was his name Walter Taylor from Miss and was wounded at Vicksburg. I have Fold3 and there is only 1 Walter Taylor listed and it ain't him. There are 853 W Taylor's listed and I was hoping that someone could help me narrow it down. She said he was from Star Miss. Thanks.

Thanks, with 853 listed under Miss in fold3 I was hoping to narrow it down a little. I don't have ancestry

It would if they were all done like Alabama with an index card and the regiments.

Any idea as to which regiment he was in?

She could not tell me. All she knew was that he was wounded at Vicksburg paroled and sent home.

The Vicksburg parole records show a W. Taylor, Company I, 6th Mississippi. Company I (Rankin Greys) was from Rankin County. The record noted he was in the hospital when paroled.

His Fold3 records don't show that part and they show him as William and not Walter but knowing this Southern Lady as I do, I will have to double check. I do know they have lived in Star Mississippi for many generations and that fits as the Rankin Greys were raised there.

The Rankin Greys muster rolls show a William Taylor and a W. L. Taylor who is shown as surrendering at Citronelle AL (Richard Taylor's surrender - May 4, 1865). I don't know what the W. L. initials mean.

I'm wondering if that W.L. Taylor could be the right man. His Fold3 file is very skimpy, but he seems like the most likely candidate. I went through the other regiments that had recruits from Rankin Co. and looked for any W. Taylors they had. Came across a couple, but there was always something that seemed to rule them out pretty quickly, like the regiment not serving at Vicksburg or the enlistment date being too late or the company not seeming to have any Rankin Co. connection.

Does she have a middle name/initial for this ancestor by any chance?

Can you ask your friend for the approximate year he was born and the names of any of his siblings that might have served? If the age is listed on the cards, the approximate year of his birth can help rule out ones that are obviously too far off. And the names of his siblings, if they show up in the same regiment, can help narrow down which W Taylor it is.
So far, it looks like the men in the following organizations were mostly from Rankin County:
Co A 6th MS Rankin Rough & Readies (surrendered at Vicksburg)
Co B 6th MS New Guard (surrendered at Vicksburg)
Co I 6th MS Rankin Greys (surrendered at Vicksburg)
Co G 10th MS Rankin Rifles (I dont think they were at Vicksburg?)
Companies of the 39th MS (org late Spring '62; captured at Port Hudson)
Co D 46th MS Rankin Farmers (org late 1862; formerly 6th Battn MS Inf; surrendered at Vicksburg)
Co A 18th MS served in the east in Barksdale's brigade

Ive got an email into her but I'm leaning Co I as @ErnieMac provided he's the only one that was listed as in the hospital and she did say he was wounded paroled and sent home.
