Need help with NC staff officer's button

Hello all.

Been a while since I found anything worth posting. (Hopefully this is...)

I found this button at an old house site and was hoping it is CW era and not post war. Unfortunately, I can't make out all of the back mark, but my best guess would be "Waterbury Button Co" with possibly a dot or star, but I think dot.

I would appreciate any information if this is Civil War era or not.

In the second photo pay close attention to the shape of the button. That shape along with a wide outer ring and state name on the front will make a piece post war. Like ucvrelics says, the back mark definitively will get you a time period.

Without my books handy I'd venture to say 1880's. Still worth collecting and preserving. I have some post war buttons too I picked up in Montana. The whole westward expansion period had always been collectible and is still growing rapidly in the collecting field.

Could someone explain the purpose of these type of post war buttons? I wouldn't think there would be a need for them after the war. Are they actually military/militia?

A lot of states send troops out to the Indian War as well as some CS vets group used them.

Ucvrelics mentioned it and it's true, right after the civil war we went into the Indian wars. Westward expansion still required soldiers to quell native uprisings. The uniforms changed. Headgear and equipment too down to the buttons but they were still needed so they were issued on new uniforms. Button evolution throughout the ages is shown through flat buttons then two piece buttons where the face crimps to the back and then 3 piece staff buttons for officers where the outer ring crimps the face and back together. The army usually shrinks in non war time but when you consider the US history we've practically always been at war with someone

I cleaned it up some. Back mark is definitely "Waterbury Button Co." with a star
