Need help Texas Units

I am needing help finding information on McCullochs 1st TX cavalry and the 8th battalion of Texas Cavalry.
The units for which my uncle seated at right in the photo.

On left is my gggg grandfather who served in numerous yank MO militia units.

This is my second family connection to the civil war that I have found that was split on sides. This is a post war photo. They obviously reconciled after the war as did my other ancestors.

Both are essentially the same unit. McCulloch's 1st Texas Cavalry (also known as the 1st Texas Mounted Rifles) was later disbanded in April 1862 after the one year enlistments expired. Many of the men then enlisted in the 3rd and 8th Texas Cavalry Battalions for some time, until the 1st Texas Cavalry was reorganized in May 1863 under command of Col. Augustus Buchel. A year later it served in the Red River Campaign.

The book "Horse Sweat and Powder Smoke" by Stanley S. McGowen is a good history of this regiment.

Cavalry regiments, especially CSA ones, will drive you to drink. They re-organize, change ID & names and usually are called by the name of their current commander.
So always check a good source to make sure you have the same unit. Also if Fold3 has filed under both regiment ID's, then check both files for your ancestor.
