I've tried looking up this bullet online and had no luck. I'm sure it's a .45 caliber but I'd like to know exactly what bullet it is. Please check out photos. Any help will b appreciated. Thanks. Josh

I'm no expert, but that looks like the Whitworth .45 short bullet. My bullet guide says that it should be .446 diameter x 1.079 long, with a dish base.

Cool. Thanks for the reply. I have a whitworth sharpshooter bullet and it's the same width. And it measures just barely over an inch. So it does match what your telling me.

The base is not correct for a "Whitworth Cylindrical" bullet, it should have a narrow cylindrical cavity in the base about 0.150" wide by about 0.375" deep.

Im definitely not a bullet expert...but weren't the Whitworth bullets made in England and shipped?..and didnt the confederates try making their own?..is it possible thats a rebel made Whitworth.?..just a guess.....

The Whitworth Rifle rear sight is graduated for both projectiles. Why? Because both types of ammunition were expected to be issued. The left side of the ladder is marked with an "H" for Hexagonal projectiles, and the right side of the ladder is marked with a "C" for cylindrical projectiles. The yardages are also different, one from the other.

I guess mainly what im trying to get at is you mentioned about the base not being correct. Is it possible it was a confederate Whitworth of a homemade mould?i have jars and jars of bullets.and so many mismatched confederate rounds...im just talking off the top of my head here..is it possible it was an impromptu round?
