I'd much appreciate any help one of you might be able to provide concerning the Confederate record of:

James W. Gilmore
enlisted 15 Sept 1862 at Newton County, MO
Sixth Cavalry

He was taken prisoner 1 April 1864 in Cooper County, MO and apparently got himself out by enlisting in Co C 5th U.S. Infantry

I'm researching the property owned by a friend and Mr. Gilmore was the first owner, having established a homestead claim in 1881 (he left Missouri right after the war and was in Oregon by the 1870 census). I'd just like to get whatever I can about his war service.

Thanks a bunch in advance.

Here are is records. On page 6 it shows that he violated his oath which I would say is the reason he was sent to Alton with hard labor. I would be interested to know what he did to violate his oath to the union.

I did not take the time to decipher the whole letter at the end of the file, but it seems to explain his situation.
I could not decipher it at all.

Thank you both @lupaglupa and @ucvrelics !

I do wonder but I suppose maybe he took an oath as a civilian and then joined a Confederate unit. Interestingly, I did find that he was a GAR member in Oregon and they participated in his funeral (in 1919).

He was only 15 when he joined up so who knows. Perhaps he was forced to join in some way ? Whatever, he did seem to get galvanized.
