National Infantry Museum

I was grateful for a quick visit to the National Infantry Museum and Soldier Center at Fort Moore (Fort Benning) Georgia this past week. I was pleasantly surprised and looking forward to a return visit. I was not able to make it thru all of the exhibits. There is also a decent sized theatre with surround sound that provides various historical presentations on battles fought by the Army's Infantry. Many exhibits on display that take depict the infantry soldier, wars and campaigns from 1600's to modern day. It can easily be a 2-3 hour visit when taking your time to take everything in. For those without military ID, you can access the visitor center at the main gate to get a visitor pass and entry onto the installation. I've included a link below and a few pictures. I was there a few years ago. Can I brag a bit? My group pulled a few strings and we were taken on a private tour of several floors deep down in the basement storage area. They brought some items that the public is never shown. Some truly rare stuff to include one of a kind artifacts.

Agree. It is a great museum. I was there several years ago before all the displays were done, but from the photos (thanks!), it looks like they have done a wonderful job.

Unless something has changed recently that's not necessary. I've been there twice in the last decade. The checkpoint gate was after the museum so visitors could drive right to the museum without needing a pass.

One of the very few museums I've seen on a military base that was outside the security perimeter.

Looking again at the above photos, I really think that the cannon on display at the Infantry Museum proves the adage that artillery truly does lend dignity to an otherwise vulgar brawl.

Unless something has changed recently that's not necessary. I've been there twice in the last decade. The checkpoint gate was after the museum so visitors could drive right to the museum without needing a pass.

One of the very few museums I've seen on a military base that was outside the security perimeter.

The old museum was on post and hard to access especially after 911. In an effort to draw more people, it (along with the West Point Museum) was moved off post following the trend of the Marine Corps Museum. That said, the tank museum at Fort Moore has been deemed a "Training Facility" which limits the public's access to only a few times of the year. The Army's Artillery Museum at Fort Sill is still on base and also deemed a "Training Facility" in order to get more funds for upkeep/expansion.

Thanks @Joshism ! My eldest was chauffeuring me around the installation and I truly lost my bearings on where I was at on post. They had just graduated a class of soldiers from Army basic training and pretty sure they marched for their families at the large parade field adjacent to the museum. So makes sense they would allow this particular area for access to visitors without military ID. She promised me a visit to the large tank warehouse museum when they offer one of their open houses.
