In honor of Women's HIstory Month:
Along with her husband and their three children, Nancy Cunningham Luckie (1820-1910) was one of just about four dozen free blacks living in the city of Atlanta at the time of the War Between the States.
Her husband, Solomon "Sam" Luckie, made a prosperous living as a barber at the Barber Shop and Bathing Salon of the Atlanta Hotel. Together they had three children and were well-known in Atlanta society.
During the Siege of Atlanta, however, Solomon was struck and killed by a Federal shell during the weeks-long bombardment of the city. His burial site is unknown, although he was probably laid to rest in Atlanta's Oakland Cemetery. Nancy died in 1910, and is buried in South View cemetery.
