Mystery Shell Fragment

I dug this nose fragment to a 12 pounder Bormann shell the other day and was cleaning it up tonight and noticed that the area where the Bormann fuze would screw in is solid iron. Is it possible that this is a Confederate shell with an iron fuze adapter??? @ucvrelics can you assist???

This is the short version as I'm on phone and my computer. There would never be an iron fuse in an iron shell due to sparking that why fuse adaptors we're brass or copper. Let's if we can get @redbob to chime in

Agreed, iron on iron plus powder no bueno.

So, I guess this is just rust from the underplug that has manifested itself in the fuze area?
