I think I have found my studies to dive into. Since finding out I have to ancestors who were in cavarly units, I am going to devote my time to learning as much as I can about the cavarly in the civil war. Particularly Texas Cavarly.

THe best way to do that is to get into a CW re-enacting unit. If you are interested in Texas Cav, find a unit that actually has horses aka a real Cav unit.

Until an individual understands all of the work and effort that went into a Cav mans daily life... you're only guessing.

There is a book out there on the Texas Rangers in the CW, I confess I don't recall the author or even the title but it had a chapter that detailed the daily life from reville to tattoo. Well written and very thought provoking.

If you are serious about learning the life of a Cav soldier I would suggest you look up a Texas Cav unit and join. Even if you opt out of becoming a re-enactor you will have the opportunity to learn a lot from those gents.

Here are some websites well worth taking a look at; I don't really know any of the 3 Tx Cav units but they do have pretty good sites. THe AC is kind of the end all be all site out there for the re-enacting world. A lot of very good info. THough be warned, do a lot of reading & searching on the site before you post. If you ask what is considered an inappropriate thing you can & will be quickly banned. And knowing what is inappropriate can be tricky.

Good Luck on your search. May your studies be as rewarding for you as they have been for me.

Incidently, on the note on TX re-enactors. When I first became involved in the hobby in the early 90's there was a texan, a cowhand by trade who literally lived and breathed the life of a CW soldier. He wore the clothing on the range & slept w/ only the gear available to a soldier of 1863/64. He did this year around. That is Living History.
