And so, the cat is out of the bag. This was announced publicly on Saturday, and now that it's out there, I will share it with you and see if anyone has anything that might help.
I've long been interested in Pope's Army of Virginia and in the Second Bull Run Campaign, which I firmly believe was Lee's greatest victory. There were three major battles during this campaign, all of which intrigue me. But I've long harbored a particular interest in the August 9, 1862 Battle of Cedar Mountain. There has only been one monograph published on this important battle, and I believe that that book is deeply flawed. There are a variety of reasons why, not the least of which is that it serves as an apologia for Jackson's poor conduct of this battle. In the process, it largely ignores the Union side of things, meaning that it is neither fair nor balanced. Consequently, after months of deliberation and discussion, I have decided to tackle a book-length study of the Battle of Cedar Mountain. I intend to do a deeply detailed tactical history that will be fair, balanced, and which will give equal time to the Union side. In so doing, I hope to add something to the body of knowledge. I have asked Steve Stanley to do my maps, and am awaiting his response. Steve does great maps that I firmly believe add to the quality of my work, and I hope that he will agree to do so.
I am just getting started with the research, as the final decision to proceed has just been made. It will be several years before a book is actually published, so please be patient--this will take time. My purpose here today is to let everyone know that I'm working on this, and that I am looking for good primary source material on the battle. I have the published regimental histories, and don't need those. I'm interested in letters, diaries, memoirs, and the like. If anyone has anything that they might be willing to share, please contact me, as I would love to discuss it with you.
Thank you all for your support. I appreciate it very much.
