Ever now and then one just falls in your lap. Being a collector of ALL things Confederate I recently acquired this jewel. I have 5 others but have never owned one this nice. This UCV officers coat was made by Pettibone Mfg Co which dates it to pre 1920. The ink name in the collar is Howard Jones and its an Alabama piece. It has original Pettibone buttons and the sash. The neatest thing about this one is the hand sewn CS cotton muslin parade flag on the sleeve. I took a peek under it and the gray is a LOT darker so its been on there for a long time. The chicken guts and the single star tag him as a Major. I plan on starting the research to find out more about Howard Jones in the next few days. A quick search on Fold3 showed several H Jones but no Howard so I will dig thru them. His war record will show what it shows what I really want to find out about him is his UCV record and the reason for the flag. Pall Bearer?

It is common. Pettibone model it's UCV officers coats from the CS style.

Is the flag sewn into the sleeve a common thing, or is this a unique, one-off?

I have never seen one with the flag sewn on the sleeve and my good friend and fellow UCV collector Russ Hayes who has the biggest UCV uniform collection hasen't either.

What a great piece! I show 25 H. Jones' from Alabama, so you have your work cut out for you!

I saw that also. That is one reason his UCV records will be so important. As a Major he is more than likely going to be an AAG to a brigade commander.

A friend of mine purchased the frock coat pictured below on eBay, as a post war UCV piece, but the more I look at it the more I think he got the steal of the year........what do you think? I have not seen the coat in person, but most of the tailoring is hand stitched (collar and button holes). I'll not discuss what he paid since we will all be crying.........it came from a Georgia estate where the son of the original house owner, was a Lt.

The blue color is suspect but you never know. I would be very interested to see the lining and what buttons are on it.

The construction is outstanding, has a green quilted lining of the early coats and the buttons are all US staff Scoville, which really is not an indicator as buttons were often given away as souvenirs. It is unhemmed and of a dark grey/ bluish hue and has faded to purple in some areas. Sleeves are a white silk like material and the inside of the collar is velvet. I like the balloon sleeves, functional cuffs, rear polished cotton pockets and hand stitching. What I don't like is the color and the short skirt, but many Southern officers preferred the shorter European "tunic" look.
