I have always loved images of the soldiers, especially after receiving a copy of Matt Bollingers A Country Divided book. Just bought my first tintype from The Historical Shop in La. A superb 1/4 Plate Tintype of a young armed infantry officer. Very sharp & clear for a tintype.

Thank you sirs, very appreciated. Someday hope to get a Confederate armed image but boy, they sure do not come cheap!

Thanks Bob. In my collecting goals my first priority is obtaining the best quality items that are available. You may pay a premium for these but owner satisfaction is priceless.

I am guessing either he is Cavalry or Artillery. Is there a way to tell from the picture?

He is most definitely NEITHER - the HUGE Hardee hat-sized BUGLE on the front of his forage cap is the insignia of INFANTRY until replaced by the regulations of 1872 with the familliar crossed rifles, which were NOT used at all during the war. His M.1850 Sword for Foot Officers is certainly correct for infantry as well, though it might also be carried by an artillery officer - NOT by a cavalryman.

James, Thanks so very much on the confirm that he is Infantry. Although I have much respect for the roles of Artillery & Cavalry in the war my interests will always be for the Infantry first. So you have made me very happy with this information.
