My 1862 Springfield M1861

My first (and likely only) Civil War era rifled musket. It's an 1862 Springfield M1861 .58 caliber rifle.

Pictured are the only markings I can readily see. Any tips on care or other information would be welcomed. It will be placed above my living room threshold.

If you don't plan to shoot it or manipulate it then just keep it clean and address any rust if there is any. Nice find

I think the rammer is a replacement. You can use some blueing to make it blend with the rest of the gun better. But it's a nice gun. I always ask when I see a M1861 by Springfield to look for initials directly behind the trigger guard bow, and in the rammer channel. See if you have any.

Yeah, I suspected the rammer and sling were replacements. No initials that I can see anywhere else on the stock.

A few coats of Kramer's Best will make her a lot happier and do some good for the wood as well as keep rust at bay. A nice young lady most would be content to have in their collection.
