Mule Meat

In honor of the anniversary of the Siege starting May 18, I was wondering if any of the CWT members have actually tried to eat Mule meat, that famous staple? And if so, what did you think about the taste, etc. ?

While I haven't actually eaten mule, I have eaten horse goulash which tasted between beef and venison, horse sausages and smoked horse meat. Horse meat can usually be found from specialized butchers in Germany.

Based on what the diaries from various soldiers who did eat mule meat say, I can't think anyone would try it unless under duress.

If you were hungry enough, anything would taste good. Mule meat would be a treat given what the Confederates endured during the siege.

Yep. You'd be surprised what you'll eat when you are truly hungry. However, most people have never experienced true hunger (thankfully).

Of the personal accounts I have encountered, most, if not all, of the men who partook of the delicacy wrote that—even despite hunger— they were pleasantly surprised by the taste and quality of mule meat. Many relating it to beef.
