I have seen the term "French pockets" used for dog ear and mule ear pockets. Does anyone know if the terms "mule ear pockets" and "dog ear pockets" were used during the Civil War? Was "French pockets" a Civil War period term?

Classic mule ear pocket (here on Civil War Marine trousers). I have seen the term used for pointed pockets with the point folded down and buttoned.

From the 1859 U.S. Marine regulations:

"The uniform trowsers for both officers, and enlisted men, shall, in cold weather, be of cloth, with French pockets, made loose, and to spread will over the boot, of white and light blue mixed, commonly called sky blue mix."

Note the regulations use the term "French pockets".
