More info on this Uniform Please

This image was uploaded to a page I run. I am curious as to the jacket. Fellow was listed as a Surgeon. Would the star and sleeve like the one in the photo be found on a surgeon?

There are other photos showing very similar uniform -- double-breasted coat, sleeve braid, rank insignia on the collar, etc. See:

Troiani's Regiments and Uniforms also includes a photograph of a Confederate surgeon's coat, much like the one in your photo, except he notes that it has buff colored trim for staff, rather than the regulation black for the medical service.

Thank you for the links. I had a couple of those saved but not all. In the last link the surgeon there has a very similar uniform.

This picture is supposed to be Surgeon John M. Hayes of the 26th Alabama.

It was posted to a facebook page that was started for descendants of the men who served in the 26th Alabama.
