Monuments and Sites in Cincinnati?

US Grant birthplace is roughly an hour away- depending on what side of town you're in.

The monument to George H Thomas is in Fort Thomas- a neat community with early 20th century post buildings still occupied. There is a Fort Thomas museum.

You are close to the route of Morgan's Raid. Not sure if a driving tour is posted- but doubt much to see anyway.

Cincinnati Museum is in the old Union Terminal. US Air Force Musem is up the road near Dayton. Newport Ky. has a nice aquarium.

If the Reds are in town, take in a game. And Cincinnati has always boasted a top-tier zoo.

Hello Pat,

I am glad I logged on and observed your post. The above suggestions are golden! If you were here longer, I would have loved to take you on a tour of the "Defense of Cincinnati 1862." Earthworks are still in the woods in Northern Kentucky.

Here is a marker with great American Civil War sites in and around Cincinnati. This marker is located at the Rankin House in Ripley, Ohio.

I will send you a message and give you my cell number if you need anything. I leave Sunday for the "Police Memorial Event" in Washington, DC. If you decide to visit the Queen City again, I can give you a tour on your next visit. The Tri-State (Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana) is full of American Civil War history.

I am going to be in Cincinnati for weekend. Anyone know of any Civil War monuments there? I am going to the Underground Railroad museum. Anything else?

I'd check out the former site of Greenwood & Webb foundry (Eagle Ironworks) - they produced machinery for the production of small arms, produced three ironclad turrets, poured guntubes - and were razed by the confederates so as to halt production of Gatling guns.

They also cast the 'Twin Sisters' of Texas Revolution fame… and the twins made a later appearance at Galveston in 1863!

Today, the Emery Center Apartments stand in the vicinity of where the foundry once sat.

There's also several guntubes in nearby Washington Park - including a 30-pounder Parrott attributed to Farragut's Fleet/Mobile!

Washington Park also has a couple of
bust-type monuments dedicated to leadership of the 9th OVI.

To continue the Ohio connection of this thread with 1SG Beaty…

The 5th USCT was originally intended to be the 127th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Governor Tod began raising the unit, but Secretary Stanton decreed that it would be a federal organization rather than a state one.

I suspect that Beaty was a Buckeye which would explain why he is in Spring Grove.

All of these are great suggestions. Let me also add in that if you like good authentic ethnic food, Tuba Baking Co is just across the river from us in Dayton, KY. They do a Swabian fusion type fare as well as traditional lye-dipped pretzels and homemade mustards. I know you're a baseball fan - the Cincinnati Reds hall of fame is pretty cool, too.

If you're in town and free on Friday at some point I'd be happy to catch up, just shoot me a PM.

Joe Hooker, the Fighting McCooks, Sydney Burbank, Jacob Ammen, and Jacob Cox are just a few of the Civil War generals.

This was my friend's site. He was a retired Oklahoma State Trooper. Sadly, Bruce passed away in 2021.
