This week Monument Monday visits the handsome Confederate Monument in Downtown Fayetteville, Arkansas' Confederate Cemetery, resting place of unknowns from the battles of Pea Ridge/Elkhorn Tavern, Prairie Grove, and other lesser-known engagements and skirmishes in Northeastern Arkansas. Also resting here is Brig. Gen. William Y. Slack, mortally wounded at Elkhorn.

In addition to Arkansas on the base of the front of the monument, the names of other Confederate States whose soldiers lie in the cemetery appear on other sides of the base: Texas, Missouri, and Louisiana.

Hey, James, where is that cemetery in Fayetteville? Some of those buildings in the back look familiar to me, but I am second-guessing myself.
It's a little obscure to locate and the way to it is poorly marked, but it's so near the small historic downtown it's not very hard to find. Of course two things have occurred in recent decades, old U.S. Highway 71 from Fort Smith to Rogers that ran right through Fayetteville has been replaced by the Interstate that completely bypasses the town; and the northern and eastern sides have been entirely engulfed by the University of Arkansas. However, if you exit the Interstate on the old highway, now the U.S. 71 business route, and get into the middle of town, the Confederate Cemetery is only two or three blocks directly east. Here are a couple of related links:

Thanks, James! I drove by these 2 places every day for a couple of years while I was a student at the U of A and had no idea! That time predates my Civil War interest, though. Will have to check them out next time I find myself in Fayetteville and am not in a hurry for an appointment. :)

Very nice statue and memorial. You would think those cannons would have been broken due to age. It makes you wonder if that "log" under the soldier's foot will fall on someone's head.
