How did you manage to get out there? It's tough.

I will have a busload the first weekend in April, and it's only the second time I've ever tried to take a large group out there.

From what I gather, the base is more welcoming of tours than what is really advertised. After a lot of online searching, I was able to get a contact's name. It was a guided tour conducted by a contractor with cultural services. I am hesitant to list his contact information on a post but will be glad to PM anyone interested. It was great and I really enjoyed it. You and I have chatted a few times, and your book really lit the fire for me. Also- I had it with me while out there.

That's great to hear. As you know now from your visit, that battlefield is a treasure, and because of where it is, few people get to enjoy it. I'm really pleased to hear that you did get to enjoy and that they're a bit more accommodating. In the years immediately after 9/11, it just about took an act of Congress to get out there.

@Eric Wittenberg I remember when the base was open access. Things have changed. MCR is indeed a treasure and it is amazing how many people have never heard of it. The tour guide says he hear soldiers say all the time- "Did you know there is a Civil War battlefield on the base?" He is a huge advocate for promoting it more, but base considerations take precedent. I am so glad to have been able to go.
