Archives seems to have added a few photographs? This sounds absurd but thought I was familiar with what was there. Did I miss this or just am not remembering it? Pretty sure our members can ID them anyway, blew up the original via National Archives high resolution option. It's 4 monitors on the James.

Cannot imagine what this looked liked to someone on the bank of the river!! Is this the Essex?

According to a description at navsource.org, the ships are (from left to right): the USS Saugus, USS Sangamon, USS Atlanta (ex CSS Atlanta) and USS Onondaga, photographed by the Matthew Brady organization. The Sangamon has a mine sweeping torpedo rake at her bow and sides.

I'm... not sure I've ever seen that one before. Amazing. Great view of Atlanta, if a little more blurry than I'd prefer.

ETA: Also a decent visual comparison of a Canonicus-class monitor (Saugus) with a Passaic-class (Sangamon). Note the differences in height, width, and placement of the funnel, and that it's clear that the Sangamon only has one gun run out (because the XV-incher couldn't be run all the way out due to the gunport being too small for it).

I can't tell if we can see the Saugus's gun ports or not; on some monitors there were "false gunports" painted on the back of the turret, and I can't determine on this photo if we're seeing the real ones or the decoys.
