U.S. monitors were also sold abroad after the war. Two notable examples were the Canonicus-class monitors USS Oneonta and USS Catawba. These were sold to Peru in 1868, and actually made the perilous Magellan passage for delivery. (with the monitors' low freeboard, that must have been quite an experience!) Both saw action in 1879, during the War of the Pacific, and were sunk by vessels of the Chilean Navy. Catawba became the Atahualpa, while Oneonta was re-named Manco Capac. [Edit: correction, Atahualpa was still in service at the time of the Chilean raid on Callao in Jan. 1881, though she had to be towed into position for firing. She was scuttled a few days later to prevent her capture by the invading Chileans.]
