I'll note that Arnold is wearing in this photograph the M.1872 dress uniform with the cords for securing the mounted plumed helmet; note also the very short collar and "paddles" on his shoulders that had replaced epaulettes.

Rescued, with 2 companies, 2 white girls by a voluntary attack upon Indians whose superior numbers and strong position would have warranted delay for reinforcements, but which delay would have permitted the Indians to escape and kill their captives.

Baldwin's top photo shows the M.1872 uniform as worn on most occasions, minus the helmet cords, etc. worn in full dress; the strange shoulder "paddles" for rank insignia are still evident however. I'll also mention that in this uniform, unlike the frock coats of the Civil War, ALL ranks, from lieutenant to colonel, wore a double-breasted tunic. For most occasions, the M.1872 five-button fatigue blouse replaced the familiar four-button sack coat of the war, and for officers shoulder straps were still worn to designate branch and rank, though they were slightly smaller than the ones worn previously.

As color bearer, led his regiment in the assault, and, though wounded, carried the flag forward to the enemy's works, where he was again wounded. In a brigade of 8 regiments this flag was the first planted on the parapet.

Being ordered to move his trains by a continuous day-and-night march, and without the usual military escort, armed his teamsters and personally commanded them, successfully fighting against heavy odds and bringing his trains through without the loss of a wagon.

Cavalry Corps, Army of the Mississippi at Harpeth River, Tenn., 17 December 1864; at Selma, Ala., 2 April 1865. Medal issued March 30, 1898.

Citation:
Obtained permission from the corps commander to advance upon the enemy's position with the 4th U.S. Cavalry, of which he was a lieutenant; led an attack upon a battery, dispersed the enemy, and captured the guns. At Selma, Ala., charged, at the head of his regiment, into the second and last line of the enemy's works.

I know it's unlikely but Arnold's face reminded me of this man, 5th US Cavalry officers in camp, somewhere ( I think ) near D.C. The man with a little boy? Mustache is the similar, too and we know how much you guys like change.
