I was looking at my AAA magazine and noticed an ad for the Museum of the Confederacy at Appomattox, opening in April.

At first, I wondered if this meant the museum was relocating from Richmond, but after checking it out, it appears that the main museum will remain in Richmond. The Appomattox museum will be the first in a planned system of satellite museums located close to Civil War historic sites.

Though the Appomattox museum will not be open full time until April, opening ceremonies are set for March 31, featuring a procession and a keynote speech by James Robertson.

For more details, see http://www.moc.org/site/DocServer/About_the_MOC-Appomattox.pdf?docID=7702.

I haven't been to Appomattox in 40 years. When I retire I hope to visit and revisit several Civil War sites. This will be one of the first.
Exactly tmh - we retired a few years back - hit the road long as the sun shines and the creek don't rise - retirement is only as boring as a person makes it

I hope to retire in two years. My wife of 38 years is superintendent of schools in our county and was a teacher, so she likes history. We went to Colonial Williamsburg on our honeymoon, so she is up for going to these sites.

Loved Williamsburg - wife took me kickin' & screamin' (not my cup of tea) - I extended our stay - loved it. You guys should have a great time, both enjoying history:smile:

They built a new museum at Jamestown for the 400th celebration that IMO is a must see if your in that area. In truth there aren't a lot of places in Va. you can go that isn't historical in some fashion. I live on a gravel road in the woods about midway between Richmond and Williamsburg.
