Missouri Home Guard Appearance

Hi,

Does anyone have some information about uniform of Missouri Home Guard which fought on Union side in summer 1861? I was trying to find some information about it, but without success. Did they wear uniforms or had civilian clothes. If uniform, what kind of?

Do you know what unit?? I am researching the 12th Missouri Infantry and looking at many photographs.

would it be any help to look at the impressions of their Confederate leaning counterparts, The Missouri State Guard? I'd imagine, although I'm no real authority, that in the summer of 1861 they would be similarly outfitted mostly as civilian citizen-farmer soldiers... although I'd also fathom that the Home Guards would likely be more uniformly outfitted at a faster pace than the MSG units... let me know, I can point you to links for Missouri State Guard impressions.

I have the book by Osprey Press "The Confederate Army 1861-1865(6) Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland" under the Men-At-Arms blue band series. It lsits all kinds of uniform and has pictures and drawings. Retail cost is $18.00. I picked it up cheaper but forget where. I am sure Amazon, or Ebay you could get it much cheaper.

I'd like to pick one of those up... but not to hijack this thread ... I'm just making sure tomalakis is fully understood... He's not looking for Confederates. Specifically, the Missouri Home Guard were Federal. They were a side and merger into the Missouri State Militia. Also Federal.

The CSA side were known as the Missouri State Guard.

I'll politely shut my pie-hole for a minute!

Actually Billy Mojo it was interesting learning about the two Missouri Guard units, (Home Federal) vs. State-CSA. Good comment.

yeah, i'm aware about the differences between union and confederate sides nomenclature (also saw the uniform plates from the mentioned osprey publication). i was specifically looking for the appearance of the force called as "missouri home guard".

i'm also inclined to think that they wore civilian clothes mostly.

we were kitted out for filming a documentary of the Battle of Blue Mills Landing (Battle of Liberty) ... portraying Missouri State Guard on September 16th? 17th? 1861... I should link to another thread in which I described the whole thing. That's me in the red shirt.

Liberty's not far from here! I'll have to catch that re-enactment when it comes around again, I hope next year.

The attached PDF will give some clues that the Home Guard unit in Boonville, Missouri was uniformed as early as November, 1861. It is pretty interesting reading (Extremely interesting to me, as the events described here took place on land where I lived in my boyhood).

Scroll down to the item dated November 1, 1861. Several runaway slaves had brought information about an impending rebel attack on the Boonville Home Guard fortifications. When the attack came, they were given arms and participated as combatants--one of the earliest instances of negroes fighting on the Union side. As a result of all this, the Home Guard sheltered these runaways within their fortification until they could be sent to Jefferson City. The letter writer describes them as being in uniform and carrying arms while being sheltered. But it also seems to be hearsay evidence.
Nevertheless, it strongly suggests to me that the German immigrant members of the Home Guard were, indeed, uniformed.

Yes. Third Iowa Volunteer Infantry. We filmed a scene in which we MSG "dismounted cavalry" recruits going to join Price's troops on the other side of the river actually captured a Colonel of the 3rd Iowa, and it was quite a story... I've related the scene in another thread... I'll see if I can find it.
