How many Civil War generals were preachers or ministers at some time in their lives before joining the Army? For example, General James A. Garfield, the future president, had been an evangelical preacher and head of a small church college prior to going into politics before the war.

Leonidas Polk was the Bishop of Louisiana (not sure on church positions as a layman)
Mark Lowrey was known as the "Preacher General" and would give sermons to the men of Cleburne's division
