Minie Balls

Hello. I've seen some useful posts regarding minie ball experiments. I'm trying to locate information on trajectories - specifically after a one ounce minie ball passes through inanimate objects when fired from period rifles (e.g., .58 Springfield) at some specified distance using 60 grains of black powder. I am unaware of any published studies and do not know anyone who might be capable of making such measurements.

I just dig them up I don't shoot them but I'm sure one of our musket firing experts will chime in on this as I have seen some post from a few of them on damage inflicted on all kinds of targets.

Some of the Marksmen/Target matches ( British, USA, et al) seem to have a good deal of information. You may be able to work backwards from there

Im curious, why do you want to know those specific parameters???

Some of the folks I speak with who are not Civil War buffs find it hard to believe that weaponry was as advanced as it was - I use empirical data to back up my work when possible. I don't own any period rifles or minie balls so I'm reaching out to people far more knowledgeable about this topic than I - I appreciate all the helpful responses that I received.

Antongeoresearch. If you are prepared to put in the keyboard 'leg work' then go to www.archive.org and track down period books on the Enfield rifle and on target shooting. There are dozens of period works there for free that go into all sorts of details about the trajectories and so forth of the military weapons of the day.

Penetration is one of the criteria that the militaries were testing and there are tables with comparative penetrations.

Super useful tip - thanks so much! I will definitely check it out. Happy T-day!

You might want to check out reprinted period books like Hans Busk's The Rifle and How to Use It.
