Hi All,
I recently found an album which had five soldier cdv's, and thought I would share them. The standing soldier with the sword is John Berry of the 16th Mich. Volunteer Inf; the cdv beside him is signed E.H. Smith, Capt. 16th Mich.Vol. Inf; the second row from left to right is Harry Tyndale of the VRC (veteran reserve corp?); then Augustus Ziegler of the 24th Mich. Vol Inf, and last, an un-named seated gentleman with sword. Would anyone happen to recognize this individual? Thanks, David

do not recognize the seated gentleman. I do see some interesting feature. He appears to wear a frock coat with false button hole flashes on the sleeve cuffs. It is odd because he also seems to have two brass buttons the sleeves further back. Officers would have had three false button hole flashes on the model 1832 coatees, on the model 1832 enlisted coatees were two false button holes. He does not appear to wear a coatee, but he is wearing a frock coat (this type of sleeve trim was on the model 1832 enlisted dress coat, but the collar is wrong for this coat)). If he is an enlisted man (based on the two false button hole flashes) then the elaborate epaulets and the false button hole on the sleeve, no NCO stripes, would indicate a militia private. He however seems to have a early model 91821- 1840 Infantry Officers' Sword with counter-guard, or perhaps and early Staff Officer Sword (1825 – 1840). Also it could be an Eagle Head Pommel sword for the very early 1800s. I understand this is rather confusing and I cannot be sure he is a private or an officer because militia companies selected their own uniforms. I would be very surprised if this was an Army coat instead of a militia coat.

Can't help much with the unnamed soldier, but I did some looking for a Harry Tyndale.

There was no Tyndale listed for Michigan. The only Tyndale (or Tyndall, or Tindale, or Tindall) I found listed as serving in the Veteran's Reserve Corps (formerly known as the Invalid Corps) was a Troilus H. Tyndale, who served in the 9th Illinois Infantry (a 3 month unit), then in the 12th Missouri Infantry listed as "Aroilus" (going from Corporal to Lieut), then the 23rd Regmt VRC (AND the 2nd Regm VRC?). This might be your Harry Tyndale; he might not have liked going by Troilus (and who'd blame him?) I'll see if I can find some more on him.

On Fold3 I found some info on Troilus Tyndale. Turns out he was shot in the fibia with a minie ball at Pea Ridge and ended up resigning his commission as a Lt in the 12th MO Infantry late in 1862 due to disability. He may have joined the VRC to continue serving as best he could. Most of the soldiers I know of who went into the VRC were transferred directly from their original units after some sort of injury or wounding caused a relatively minor disability.

Still not sure if your Harry Tyndale is Troilus Tyndale, but I think it's a pretty good bet.

Hello,

I have a duplicate CDV of the officer identified as John Berry. Would it be possible to get a scan of the back of you photo to verify the ID for my duplicate. Thanks for any help you can provide on this matter.
