Melrose Caverns, Harrisonburg, Virginia

I happened across an article describing the newest 'show' cave open in Virginia and they are stressing its Civil War history as part of the attractions.

Melrose Caverns is a limestone cave which lies beneath the former Harrison farmland. The area hosted troops from General Nathaniel Bank's command in 1862. Soldiers soon found the entrance to the cave and left behind signatures carved into the rock walls.

I know not everyone likes to be underground but I love caves - especially during the heat of summer when the cool underground air provides a nice break! You can read about the cave's history at their website:

Wife, both girls and I did an underground tour at the Mammoth Cave National Park. We did the 'moderate' level tour…….
my wife was not fully aware of what we were doing, she claustrophobic, it did not turn out to be a good tour for her. Both my girls loved it, the wife not so much

Mammoth Cave is a neat place to visit. There are also hiking trails and near the park are a couple of old cemeteries; one has the original church still standing. At night deer come around and graze near the guest cabins and during the day wild turkeys wander around between the guest cabins and the park's store.

Another interesting cavern system is the Lost Sea near Sweetwater in East Tennessee. It has a large lake fully under ground. It also has a tie to the Civil War. Apparently the Confederates mined saltpeter for the manufacture of gunpowder in the cavern. A Union spy attempted to blow up the operation but was caught and shot. At one point in the tour they cut off the lights for you to see how dark it gets. It is the definition of pitch black.

Always liked caves. Been to Mammoth Cave several times.

There are several in the Valley to visit. Luray is probably the best known but I personally really enjoyed Shenandoah cavens. it is between Mt. Jackson and New Market.

Never been to Mammoth Cave. Carlsbad Caverns is awesome.
